Dirty Little Secrets

14 Apr

One of my favorite bloggers put up a post about her top food indulgences and it got me thinking about my own secret food shames.  So here they are, in no particular order.  Now they aren’t secrets anymore!

1.  French Fries.  Waffle cut, shoe string, or wedges, as long as they aren’t crinkle cut (which are just wrong) I love them.  Doesn’t matter if they are fast food or homemade, dipped in ketchup, ranch or covered in cheese, I love them all!  That being said, waffle fries covered in cheese, bacon, scallions and dipped in ranch or horseradish sauce are the ultimate naughty indulgence.

2.  Popcorn.  When I was in high school and college, I worked at a movie theater.  Ate popcorn every single day.  You would think I would’ve gotten sick of it.  But it’s still one of my favorite foods.  The best is homemade, which if you’ve never done it, is much easier than you might think!  Here’s how.

3.  Chocolate Chip Cookies straight from the oven.  So hot they fall apart in your hands and you get chocolate all over your fingers.  And I always eat my cookies with a tall, cold glass of milk.

4.  Hot Box Breadstix.  My friend Matt taught me his technique for dipping first in cheese then in ranch.  The cheese doesn’t get in the ranch.  But if you do it the other way around, it’s a cheesy, ranchy mess.  Thanks, Matt.  As if stuffing my face with breadsticks wasn’t shameful enough, now I have to dip them (neatly) in two sauces as well.

5.  Cinnamon Crust.  My mom didn’t invent this, but I don’t know if anyone else calls it by this name or does it using a whole pie crust as opposed to scraps.  Basically she would take a refrigerated Pillsbury pie crust, place it flat on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and bake until golden.  Every time I smell cinnamon I think of Cinnamon Crust.

6.  Ranch Salad Dressing.  I’ve already mentioned it twice above so I figure it deserves a spot of it’s own.  It’s official–I’m a Hoosier.

7.  Cold Stone Creamery Cake Batter Ice Cream.  With mix-ins, without mix-ins, doesn’t matter.

8.  Milka.  Never heard of it?  It’s a candy bar they sell all over Europe.  I’m not even sure you can buy it here.  But somehow I’ve managed to have two in my life and I am ruined for all other candy bars.  The last time I went to Europe I brought back really really good hairspray that you can’t get here.  (I am almost as serious about my hair as my food.)  Next time I go, I’ll bring back a few less cans of hairspray to make room for the Milka bars.

9.  Oreos minus the cream.  Yes, that’s right–without the cream.  I love the cookie, hate the cream.  So I pick it off and throw it away.  Don’t judge me.  I’ve been meaning to try this recipe for homemade oreos.  I’ll let you know when I do.

10.  Biscuits and Gravy.  They don’t have biscuits and gravy everywhere.  When I lived in Seattle, PEOPLE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT IT WAS.  Can you believe there are people who’ve never had biscuits and gravy!?  I always eat a little extra just for them.

Ok, so I showed you mine.  Your turn!

Now, that’s a list you can be proud of! 😉

For me it is raw cookie dough, nachos with fake cheese, and Toffifay candy.

Raw cookie dough prob would have made my list if I did 11! I like the fresh from the oven cookies just slightly better than the dough.

Thanks for the link! I’m going to be using that site for more than just Milka.

Jungle Jim’s (in Cincy) has Milka. First place I’ve ever seen it in the US.

I love Milka – first time I had it was when I was maybe 13 when my brother brought it back for me from Germany. I know you can buy it in Disney World – the Germany pavilion in Epcot. So if you ever take a trip, stock up. And if you want some, I’ll be there in one month and would be happy to get you some! 🙂

Very solid list! My list would be very similar, add Fried Lake Perch and keep the cream in the Oreos and I think they would be the same (never tried Milka).

Oh, your making me hungry at 8:30 in the morning! I have never heard of this cinnamon crust but it sounds so amazing wrong, it could be my new super guilty pleasure! I haven’t checked here, but I know where I used to live, they had Milka at Target…it may be so much closer that you thought! Good luck with that one 🙂 Really great blog, glad I found it.

I used to find Milka in Walmart of all places. Some grocery stores also carry it, Jewel in the Chicago area. Love your list and completely agree about the french fries.

My mom had her own version of cinnamon crust: She would take her leftover pie crust and brush it with butter, add a nice layer of cinnamon and sugar and roll it up and cut it into little mini cinnamon rolls and bake. These days when I and the siblings visit, she forgoes the pie part all together, resulting in many more tiny flaky cinnamon rolls.

Nothing wrong with crinkle cut fries. They just have to be fully cooked. Now tater tots are just nasty. Like the ugly cousin of the french fry family.

The only guilty pleasure food I can think of (meaning that when I make them, I generally try to give them away lest I eat them all in a couple days) are no-bake cookies.

Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your content seem to be running off the screen in Firefox.
I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know.
The style and design look great though! Hope you get the problem resolved soon.
    Many thanks
