Mama Carolla’s–Great Atmosphere, Decent Food

27 Oct

Comfortable, classic, and romantic are three words that describe the atmosphere at Mama Carolla’s Old Italian Restaurant in Broad Ripple.  This is a great restaurant for a date or leisurely dinner among friends; the service is polite but not overly attentive.  My friends and I could not seem to get our waiter’s attention when we needed something.  However, when he was there, he was polite and knowledgeable about the menu.

The menu has a little something for everyone–fish, pork, veal, beef, chicken and pasta.  There are the usual suspects like meatballs and Fettuccini Alfredo, as well as twists on traditional favorites, like Rosemary Chicken Lasagna.  Bread is hot, delicious and complimentary and entrees are served with choice of soup or salad.

Our salads were overdressed, which was a shame because the vegetables were fresh and would have been crisp if they weren’t swimming.  Our entrees were good, but no one was blown away.  At our table we had Ravioli, Tilapia, Chicken Alfredo, Manicotti and Eggplant Puttanesca.

Mama Carolla's Tilapia

The Tilapia was the clear winner, with a crispy walnut crust and blackberry sauce.  The Chicken Alfredo also received good marks–you really can’t go wrong with butter and heavy cream.  The Ravioli sounded delicious on the menu as “filled with a spinach cheese mixture, covered with a creamy pesto sauce”.  The presentation of this dish left much to be desired.  The color was a creamy brown with flecks of green.  Fortunately it tasted much better than it looked.  However, it was agreed that the pasta was undercooked and quite chewy.

Mama Carolla's Ravioli

All in all, Mama Carolla’s offers decent Italian fare, large portions and a nice dining experience in a beautiful atmosphere.  It’s not my top choice for Italian, but I would dine there again.
